Kings of Kowie - two years in a row!

KES RED BLADES - KINGS OF KOWIE

The King Edward first eight crew travelled to Port Alfred to race at the annual Schools’ Boat Race over December and to defend their 2016 title. They did not disappoint and came home victorious and are proudly KINGS OF KOWIE - TWO YEARS IN A ROW!

The race, over 5.9km’s, is viewed as one of the premier events on the Schools’ Rowing Calendar and King Edward returned as reigning champions. Last year’s win will allowed the crew to start first in the time trial on Friday 8th December and here our crew set the fastest time in the trials, setting up a final vs St Andrews on Saturday, 9 December.

The crew had been training hard during the examination period and will be moved down to the Vaal River for an extended preparation camp prior to departure for Port Alfred on December 5th. Spirits were high in the squad with six members of last year’s crew returning to the Kowie this year. The boys were quite aware of the added pressure that last year’s victory places on them this year and expect to face intense competition at the event. The first eight win at Gauteng Champs has gone some way to buoying confidence in the boat but the crew is taking nothing for granted. And St Andrews threw everything at them in the final, but the boys held strong in the face of adversity and fierce competition and brought the trophy home.

Club Captain, Damien Bonhage-Koen returned for the race, together with Christopher Baxter, Nic Nepgen, Dean Geldhof, Cameron Menton and Brandon Bester. The new squad members, Benjamin Dyke, Marc Durandt and Liam Karovsky, had gained some valuable experience in the boat already this season and all added good value to the crew.

Tait McJarrow, the crew cox, made his first appearance at Boat Race and proved he is a seasoned campaigner and an integral part of the crew’s success to date. In what is in essence a coxe’s race, Tait had an important role to play over the two days of racing.

We congratulate and humbly applaud the crew in their endeavour to defend their title so well.

Red Blades we are so very proud of you all, coaches, support crew and our most wonderful supporting parents - we thank you all.

Go School.
