Newsletter March 2018

Dear Parents and King Edward VII School Community

It is with a great sense of pride that I pen this latest communique to you all.

I am proud because our boys have given me a great deal to be proud of.   There have been a string of excellent performances, both in and out the classroom.

The Matric class of 2017 delivered outstanding results which resulted in King Edward VII School, being placed first in the District.  In addition to this we attained a most credible 89.11% Bachelor Pass Rate.
The following Academic Awards for the present Matric group were made at a recent assembly:

PRESENT POSITION:

N Fazluddin   Gr 12A
JK Quigley Gr 12A
LM Armstrong   Gr 12A
S Newland-Nell  Gr 12A
K Morse  Gr 12A

NEW AWARDS:

I had the privilege of attending the production of ‘Sarafina’, jointly staged by ourselves and Kingsmead College.  The directors from Kingsmead College did an outstanding job and made the play extremely relevant to today’s issues in education, as well as reminding us of the very dark days back in 1976.  The young men of King Edward VII School performed their roles with a great deal of skill and enthusiasm.  Thank you to Mr Bremner, our Head of Drama, for his total commitment to this play and the countless hours he spent attending rehearsals, in addition to organising all the transport to and from Kingsmead College.

We had a very exciting term on the sports fields with a number of outstanding achievements attained.  The winning of the Johnny Waite Trophy by our First XI Cricket; the 1st Place at South African Rowing Championships by our First Pair and First Four; Four athletes represented the School at the SA Championships, where N de Swardt won the U17 High Jump (2.10m) and L Pillay won the U15 400m in a new record time of 47.99s, are some of the noteworthy achievements.  More importantly however, was the improved levels of participation in our Summer Sport programme with notable increases in sports such as Tennis and Squash.

Culturally, the boys have participated in a number of Public Speaking events, Debating tournaments and Pipe Band competitions where we have demonstrated some outstanding results.  Our Chess teams have grown from strength to strength and are faring extremely well in the league tables.

At a recent assembly, I had the honour of congratulating S Ncala on his appointment as Chief Whip of the Johannesburg Junior Council and C Beukes as Co Mayor.

It is extremely encouraging to see our boys engaging in the vast array of opportunities on offer at the School but my greatest moment of pride was when some 250 boys donned a purple speedo to run in the Hollard Daredevil run (highlighting testicular cancer) and chased Cancer outta town!  Thank you to Mr Magubane, Mr Chopamba, Mr McKenzie, Mr Visser, Mr Sim, Mr van Vuren and Mr Baloyi, who joined me and the boys in supporting this fantastic initiative.   This also served as a fitting tribute to Mrs Fielding (Physical Science teacher) who is in the midst of her own person battle with cancer.

KESCO has also been extremely busy this term collecting water and Easter Eggs for various charities.  These boys do a tremendous amount of good for both local and national charities and I, once again, implore our own community to support them in all they do.

In the final assembly of the term we paid a fitting tribute to Mr David Mohale who has recently celebrated his 45th year working at the School.  Mr Mohale started working at King Edward VII School as a 20 year old, on 18 March 1973.  His first and to date only job!   We are eternally grateful to David for his wonderful service to this great School.
