CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
King Edward VII School is a secondary school that offers the general pathway to obtain a National Senior Certificate (NSC). This examination is based on a curriculum for Grades 10 – 12.
GRADE 8 & 9 (General Education and Training – GET phase)
The Grade 8 and 9 Learners follow a general course with the following subjects:
- Home Language (English)
- 1st Additional Language: Afrikaans or isiZulu
- Mathematics
- Natural Sciences
- Social Sciences
- Arts & Culture
- Technology
- Economic Management Sciences
- Life Orientation

GRADE 10, 11 & 12 (Further Education and Training – FET phase)
At the end of Grade 9 learners must choose seven subjects for Grade 10 – 12.
Four core subjects (compulsory):
Home Language (English)
- First Additional Language (Afrikaans or isiZulu)
- Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
- Life Orientation
3 elective subjects from below:
- Accounting
- Business Studies
- Engineering Graphics and Design
- Geography
- History
- Information Technology
- Life Sciences
- Physical Sciences
- Visual Arts

CALCULATION OF MARKS
Assessment in Grades 8 and 9:
- The internal assessment mark allocated to assessment tasks completed during the school year will be 40% and the end of the year assessment mark will count 60% of the total mark.
- The end of the year assessment must consist of tasks that are internally set, marked and moderated, as specified in the Subject Assessment Guidelines.
Assessment in Grades 10 and 11:
- The internal assessment mark allocated to assessment tasks completed during the school year will be 25% and the end of the year assessment mark will count 75% of the total mark.
- The end of the year assessment must consist of tasks that are internally set, marked and moderated, as specified in the Subject Assessment Guidelines.
Assessment in Grade 12:
- The internal assessment mark will be 25% and the external assessment mark will make up 75% of the total mark, as specified in the Subject Assessment Guidelines.
- The weighting for assessment in the subject Life Orientation in Grade 12 is an exception.
- The internal assessment component will be 100% of the total mark. The internal assessment will be externally moderated.
THE NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE (NSC)
Qualifications
In the General Education and Training (GET) phase, Grade 9 is the end of the compulsory phase of schooling. Education in this band aims at providing learners with the basic competencies or a broad foundation of knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed for lifelong learning.
A qualification at this level must be registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at level 1 and will be quality assured by the relevant ETQA (Umalasi).
A Grade 9 qualification will be required for access to Grade 10 at a school.
Minimum NSC requirements for further studies relating to Higher Certificate, Diploma and Bachelor Studies.
Higher certificate pass requirements
- Must obtain 40% in your Home Language.
- Must obtain at least 40% in two other subjects.
- Must obtain at least 30% for three other subjects.
It is important to note that one of your languages must either be English or Afrikaans to qualify for a Higher Certificate.
Diploma pass requirements
- Must obtain at least 40% for your Home Language.
- Must obtain at least 40% for three other subjects (Four, including your home language.).
- Must obtain at least 30% for two other subjects.
Bachelor’s degree pass requirements
- Must obtain at least 40% for your Home Language.
- Must obtain at least 50% for four other subjects.
- Must obtain at least 30% for two other subjects.
