2020 Remembrance Day Service
Dear King Edward VII Community
On Sunday, 8 November 2020, we will be holding our Annual Remembrance Day Service, which honours and acknowledges the ultimate sacrifice of so many King Edward VII Old Boys. It also serves as a reminder that many other families associated with our School may also have lost family members during the war periods, as well as those who may have lost family members during the struggle years of Apartheid.
COVID-19 has played havoc with our planning for this year’s Service and up until 5 weeks ago, I thought it highly unlikely that we would be able to host the Service, let alone perform the time honoured parade.
In true King Edward spirit a group of 60 Grade 11’s have volunteered and given up a great deal of their personal time, to firstly learn to march and then learn to perform the full Colour Parade. That these boys have learnt this in such a short space of time speaks volumes, not only to their own personal commitment, but also to the fact that the boys of this School place such high value in respecting the very nature of this Service. The Staff under the guidance of Mr Marx must also take a great deal of credit for ensuring that this most important event takes place.
Sadly, we are only able to accommodate 230 seated guests. We have made these places available to specifically invited guests, the Grade 11 parents of the boys performing the Parade and a handful of staff who need to perform certain duties on the day.
I fully understand that many of our community would love to attend this Service, but it is just not possible. We will endeavor to stream parts of the Service, particularly the reading of the Roll of Honour.
Hopefully, we will be able to return to an open invitation in 2021.
Take care and stay safe.
