HISTORY
Athletics was the first sport that King Edward VII introduced as an extra curricular activity. The first King Edward VII School Athletics team competed in 1905, and the school has been at the forefront of athletics ever since. The School Championship competition was run for the first time in 1905 and by tradition the victor ludorum in the School Championships is appointed athletics captain.
King Edward VII School introduced the Old Edwardian Inter High Schools Athletics Championship, or “Inter High” in 1982. The event is held at the end of each athletics season with all of the major boys’ schools competing. Schools are allowed to enter only one athlete in each event, except for the 1500m and 3000m events where 2 competitors from each school are allowed. Due to these competition rules the championship is extremely hard to win, and the margins of victory are inevitably small. King Edward VII School has won the inter high championship 22 times in the 36 year history of the competition. The hosting of the Inter High event is now rotated among the competing schools, but King Edward VII School remain custodians of the event.
Historically, the triangular meeting between King Edward VII School, Jeppe High School for Boys’ and Parktown Boys’ High, is the single longest running athletics meeting in the country; it has been contested every year since 1957.
