Over the years the facilities and support of the Old Edwardian Society – the King Edward VII School’s Old Boys Club have been vital and home games were played at Old Eds.

Way back in the late 50’s well-known players such as Patrick Reilly, Rohan Summers, Graham MacDonald, Bruce Bredenhann and even Ali Bacher played for the School and the head boy in 1960 Graham Bell.

In the early 1960’s well-known players Alan Schwartz and Errol Gerson emerged. In 1961 the School 1st Team won the second league and was promoted Team Blazers were awarded for the first time.

In 1963 two other well-known players Errol Benjamin and Mel Baleson joined the first team under Schwartz’s captaincy and the latter was the first to receive tennis colours in an excellent year in which we played 17 and only lost 3 matches and had 3 teams.

The amazing Mr Hugh Wilson was the Master-in Charge of tennis. By the mid 60’s Baleson had emerged as our top player and was chosen for Transvaal Schools.

In 1967 the School’s new courts were built and this was a great stimulus to tennis under the captaincy of David Moss and in 1968 under Michael Meyers. Meyer’s captaincy had another great year early. Tennis grew rapidly and by the early 90’s the School had 8 teams.

In the early 90’s Ms Mariette Buys, the present teacher in charge was guiding tennis and Michael Polasik was chosen in 1997 for the SA Schools Team. That year 5 players were chosen for the Southern Gauteng squad.

We continued to play in local leagues and have occasional tours to Natal. As had occurred for many years there was a house competition.

In 2001 we played in Pretoria Boys High Centenary Festival and our young squad had an excellent Centenary year.

Currently the 1st Team is playing in League 1A and with further commitment and determination are hoping to move into the Premier League during 2012 season.
